Bhutan is home to more than 10 hot spring sites spread across the country.  DHI is already exploring the incredible potential of geothermal energy with the support of World Bank and Iceland Geo Survey. In a step forward in geothermal exploration as part of DHI’s investment strategy, DHI has partnered with Arctic Green Energy, a global leader in exporting Iceland’s geothermal and renewable energy expertise, through a MoU to unlock and harness Bhutan’s various geothermal potential.

This collaboration with Artic Green Energy aims to explore a wide range of applications, including heating, cooling, wellness centers, and even the possibility of generating electricity from geothermal energy.

 Several key areas of cooperation are outlined in the MoU:

• Harnessing shallow geothermal resources for a variety of uses
• Capacity building and training geothermal talent from Bhutan
• Technology transfer to enhance Bhutan's geothermal industry
• Raising funds for large-scale, economically feasible geothermal projects
• Building and operating geothermal wellness centers in Bhutan
• Fostering strong clean energy collaboration between Bhutan and Iceland

The partnership also provides DHI with direct access to an advisory board led by industry experts in Iceland. With their expertise and support, the collaboration is poised to build a viable geothermal industry in Bhutan. Specifically, DHI is planning for “proof of concept” for the application and uses of shallow geothermal targeting towards upcoming projects in Bhutan. Arctic Green has committed to assist DHI in this pursuit in all possible ways.

This MoU represents an ambitious and forward-thinking commitment to renewable energy, with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and decreasing dependency on fossil fuels globally. By working together, the parties aim to secure government support and international investment, driving forward this exciting clean energy initiative.
